A VNEC Observation Activity
Detective Uno speaking:
Hello investigators!
My name is Uno, and I am the lead detective in the Forest of Friends.
This is my partner Ricky Ticky, the Rectifier.
Today we need your help with a very important investigation.
Step 1: Observe the Scene
Before we read any words, we want you to look carefully at the picture.
Take a moment and ask yourself:
- What do you see?
- Where are the characters standing?
- Who is looking at whom? How do the animals look or feel?
Remember, detectives notice the small clues.
Step 2: Record Your Clues
Ricky Ticky writes everything down in our investigation journal.
Ask yourself:
Do the characters look happy, worried, or curious?
What might have happened before this moment?
What might happen next?
There are no wrong answers.
Every investigator may see something different.
Step 3: Now Read the Words
Now we read the story text.
Did your observations change?
Did you notice something new after reading the words?
Sometimes the words confirm what we saw.
Sometimes they reveal something we missed.
That is how detectives learn. tep 4: Compare Your Observations
Investigators share their ideas.
Some students may notice different clues than others.
When we compare our observations, we understand the story more deeply.
Ricky Ticky’s Detective Tip
Good investigators do three things:
Observe first
Ask questions
Listen to other investigators
Detective Uno’s Conclusion
Stories are full of emotional clues.
When we take time to look carefully, we learn how characters feel and why they act the way they do.
That is the heart of Visual Narrative Emotional Comprehension (VNEC).
And remember investigators…
Every child deserves a forest full of friends.
